Ignition interlock device: a breathalyzer test installed in a vehicle to measure the driver's blood alcohol content. If the driver's BAC registers anything above 0.0, the car will not start. The device requires the driver to repeatedly blow into the device to ensure that another person didn't initially blow into the device.
It can be very expensive to install and maintain the ignition interlock device. Initial installation is around $200, and maintenance is around $65 a month. This is in addition to the other penalties of a DWI conviction: license suspension, fines, driver's license points, and possible jail time.
Strict DWI Laws in North Carolina
North Carolina has tightened its DUI laws. Years ago, an individual with BAC of .16 or higher had to have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle. Now, individuals convicted of DWI that tested .15 or more BAC must have the device installed.
Blood alcohol content of .15 is more than twice the legal limit. In addition to having the ignition interlock device installed in their car, the individual will have his or her license suspended immediately. There is a mandatory 45-day waiting period from the day an individual is convicted before he or she can petition the court for limited driving privileges for ignition interlock devices.
